  • Company Background

PetMind is a nationwide pet product retailer in the United States. With inflation hitting 41-year highs, the company is planning to reduce the cost of customer retention by improving brand loyalty. The first strategy is to launch a monthly pet box subscription in three months.

The marketing team is preparing a list of popular products for the pet box subscription. The chief marketing officer wants to know whether the list should only include the products being purchased more than once.

    Customer Questions

The marketing team would like to answer the following questions to help with the decision: ● How many products are being purchased more than once? ● Do the products being purchased again have better sales than others? ● What products are more likely to be purchased again for different types of pets?

    Data Validation

The original data is 879 rows and 9 columns. The first thing I did was to remove rows that should be excluded according to the data set description. I first removed rows where the pet type was hamster and Rabbit. This was 46 rows, leaving 833 rows of data. Also converted sales column into numeric removing Dollar signs from rows eg $61000 was converted to 61000.Looking at the remaining columns:

There were no missing values in columns.

There were 11 unique product category, as expected.

There are 5 categories for pet size as expected.

There are 4 unique pet types(Hamster and Rabbit have been excluded).

Ratings column is on 10 point scale as expected.

    There are 2 Rebuy Options : 1 or 0.

    Data Discovery and Visualization

How many products are being purchased more than once?

All 11 products have been purchased more than once. The most common products are Equipment,Snack,Toys. This would suggest that marketing team should focus on these popular products for pet subscription.

Do the products being purchased again have better sales than others?

Except for few categories of product, products being purchased again have no better sales than non repurchase products. This would suggest that repurchase products have no advantage over non repurchase products in terms of sales. So marketing team should focus on products whose sales are higher irrespective of rebuy category.Hence including only products in pet subscription which are being sold more than once is not a good idea.

Which pet category products are sold most ?

Products of Cats and Dogs are sold most among different pet types. But which products are sold most in product category can be answered by next graph.

What products are more likely to be purchased again for different types of pets ?

1.Horizontal bar graph shows that Toys,Snack and Equipments are likely to be purchased again for all 4 types of Pets. Also all products of Dogs and cats are likely to be purchased again.

    1. Circle View graph depicts the same conclusion but provides birds eye view .

    Does price affect sales ?

This scatter plot suggests sales are not price driven.

    Conclusion

1.The above analysis suggest that marketing team should prepare pet subscription for products of category like Equipment,Toys and Snacks for all four pet types.

2.For Dogs and Cats they can include all products in pet subscription.

3.Only including products in pet subscription which are being sold more than once is not a good idea.
