Project Overview

As someone who has always been passionate about gaming, some of my fondest memories of childhood involve playing PlayStation and PlayStation 2 with friends and family. The PlayStation wasn't just a gaming console in my household; it was a device that helped foster community, connection, and growth.

That's why I decided to analyze DataCamp's video game sales dataset, which features console and video game sales metrics across PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo.

Data Description

Video Game Sales: Contains sales metrics for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, various video game publishers, and video game genres Years: 1994 to 2010

Insight #1

The PlayStation 2 is one of the best-selling consoles of all time, with more than 158 million units sold worldwide(1). From 1994 to 2010, Sony managed to amass 3.4 billion dollars in sales across all their console and portable gaming systems. Grand Theft Auto San-Andreas for the PlayStation is one of the best-selling video game titles, with 21 million copies sold. Action, sports, and racing games were the top genres for PlayStation, and they accumulated 1.4 billion dollars in sales from 2000 to 2010.

Insight #2

Growing up, I enjoyed playing Pokemon or Mario on the GameBoy or the Nintendo DS, so I wasn't surprised to see Nintendo's strong sales figures. From 1994 to 2010, Nintendo managed to amass 2.5 billion in sales across all their consoles and portable gaming systems. Nintendo's Wii gaming console was wildly popular when it was released and became one of the best-selling gaming consoles of all time, selling 101.63 million units(1). Nintendo's Wii Sports for the Nintendo Wii is the 4th best-selling video game of all time, selling 83 million units. The top-selling genres for Nintendo were sports, miscellaneous, and platform, which amassed $1.1 billion in sales from 1994 to 2010.

Insight #3

I enjoyed playing Halo 3 and Call of Duty on Xbox with my friends growing up. Xbox's Xbox Live feature allowed me to connect, play with friends, and have a sense of community. From 2000 to 2010, Microsoft's Xbox amassed 836 million dollars in sales across its initial two console offerings. Microsoft's Xbox 360 has become one of the 9th best-selling consoles ever, with 85.73 million units sold(1). The Xbox's highest-selling video game title was Kinect Adventures, with 22 million units sold. Call Of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty Modern Warfare took the 2nd and 3rd spot with 15 million and 14 million units sold. Halo 3 took the 4th spot with 12 million units sold. Unsurprisingly, the top genres for Xbox were Shooter, Action, and Sports, which amassed $529 million in sales.
