Summer Research Intern

cell biology. I applied gut hormones to brain cells known as tanycytes, which are located on the third ventricle on the brain near the blood-brain barrier. Recent studies have shown that tanycytes may play a role in regulating our metabolism and satiety. Since these gut hormones have also be known to affect metabolism and appetite, I wished to investigate if they were linked in any way. By observing if there was a link, I could find out whether tanycytes play a role in integrating information on how much is consumed and the current metabolic status of the body. This research could be a small but significant stepping stone into designing specially designed drugs that would target tanycytes and cause the body to stop eating. By eating less, we can lose weight. In summary, brain slices of mice were taken and placed in a special solution known as fura-2a for 90 minutes then placed on a microscope. Once the hormones and tanycytes were in position, the hormones were fired at the tanycytes and I would see if there was a response from the tanycytes. Calcium imaging was used to investigate if there was a response from the tanycytes. The experience was invaluable. It was truly fascinating to see the link between cell signalling from my extra biology module and neuroscience being applied to a real-world problem. It took a lot of determination, concentration and precision to ensure the experiments were performed with high levels of accuracy. Skills acquired: -Gained ability to use a variety of software and technical equipment -Developed use of Microsoft office (word, excel, PowerPoint) -Developed the ability to perform analysis of large quantities of data in a short time frame -Demonstrated strong communication and presentation skills through oral and written means -Enhanced teamwork and relationship building skills
