Keble College, Oxford | Jan 2021 - Sep 2022

Research Fellow and Tutor

Research: Developing novel experimental techniques and modelling tools to better understand the impact behaviour of soft materials. Teaching: Topics from the core Engineering Science syllabus, including: Statics, Solid Mechanics, Materials and Dynamics.

University of Oxford | Apr 2020 - Aug 2022

Research Scientist: Mechanics of Materials

The focus of my research is to better understand the mechanical properties of polymers and their composites, specifically the response to high rate deformations, such as those experienced in impact loading scenarios. These materials are widely used for energy absorbing applications in industries as diverse as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, biomedical, defence and consumer goods. However, their behaviour during impact is not well understood, which prevents us from optimising the material properties and structural design. One of the reasons for this is that their mechanical response is highly dependent on the loading rate. The final products are therefore heavier or less effective than they could be. My research develops new methods for experimentally measuring the response of polymers to impact, and for modelling and designing polymer structures. In the future, it will allow us to produce high performance, recyclable, polymers that are optimised to work efficiently in different impact applications.
