Forensic Scientist II - Full Testing Team

Worked within the Utah Bureau of Forensic Service's full testing team to identify bodily fluids, analyze items of evidence, prepare samples for DNA, and then conducted full DNA analysis on forensic casework samples. Testified in court when called.

- Aseptic microbiological technique for the preparation of and testing on raw and finished meat products, surface swabs and water samples for the presence of bacterial contamination. - Multiplex PCR analysis for E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella on a large volume of samples nightly, for clients expecting a fast turnaround. - Adherence to ISO 17025 accreditation standards for quality control and traceable laboratory testing. - Laboratory maintenance and organization, including cleaning and disinfecting laboratory space following exposure to potential bacterial health hazards, inventory and receipt of critical laboratory materials and equipment, equipment calibration and verification.

Research Intern

Managed laboratory stock and organization, cleaned and disinfected laboratory space as included in standard operating protocols. Cleaned and disinfected metal instruments, as well as handled and disposed of biohazardous trash and sharps via autoclave. Trained and assisted in laboratory procedures, including: animal sample processing, animal (rodent & cervid) necropsies, prion detection assays, DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and animal care studies. Created and maintained Microsoft Xcel computer databases of sample records, -80oC freezer inventories, and animal blood work (complete blood counts and chemistry panels). Familiar with laboratory ordering and scientific supply websites, as well as contacting customer service for quotes/ demonstrations of new laboratory equipment. Helped manage and train fellow undergraduate students, also participated in training other new laboratory members (graduate students, research associates, and post-doctoral fellows).

Larimer County Coroner's Office | Feb 2015 - Jun 2015

Forensic Medicolegal Death Investigation Intern

Received training and examination in all areas of death investigation, including reported deaths, database entry, investigative reports, case files, jurisdiction, forensic photography, fingerprints, autopsy assistance, and death scene attendance. Shadowed investigators during on-call hours for response to scenes, followed appropriate protective measures, and assisted in photography, removal of decedent, transport to morgue/funeral home, and notification of next of kin.  Observed and received training in the morgue in relation to autopsy proceedings, including preparation, autopsy procedure, and clean-up/re- stocking of the morgue. Assisted pathologists/investigators as able and needed.
