Planning and Reporting Officer

My main responsibility at Birmingham City University is to perform quality assurance on students and university data for the purpose of statutory returns. These returns include: - HESA Student Return, - HESA Aggregate Offshore Return, - OfS Higher Education Students Early Statistics (HESES) Return. I designed a suite of data quality checks, using Alteryx to manipulate the data and Tableau to present the checks, to determine the overall credibility of the Students Return. The purpose of the suite is to reduce workload in future returns by automating a number of the checking processes within the Planning and Performance Department.

Planning and Data Analyst

My role was that of the Planning and Data Analyst at Newman University. My main responsibility was to lead the development of Newman's Business Intelligence provision, Tableau. I worked with stakeholders across multiple areas of the university, from academia to marketing and management, to determine their data requirements. I then used what I've learned to design and implement dashboards that aid in their decision making. These dashboards were on areas that include application analysis, enrolment breakdowns, access & participation targeting, and student survey results.

Data & Examinations Officer

My role was that of the data and examinations manager at the University of Birmingham School. The main responsibility I had was to manage the school's data system on SIMS by maintaining assessment data systems, producing data reports for a variety of stakeholders, and analysing and visualising various pieces of student data to provide targeted support to students, teachers and subject leaders. Additionally, as the sole examinations officer, my role was also to manage the school's examinations at GCSE and A-Level by entering students for exams, managing invigilators, securely storing materials and liaising with the facilities team. My role also included interaction with students, and I have helped run school trips, delivered mock interviews for our Oxbridge applicants and helped with the running of a Sixth Form chess club.

My position here was to be responsible for the examinations process at Summerhill School. This involved preparing for and running real GCSE examinations, as well as storing confidential materials, coordinating invigilators and entering students for examinations. Working within the Cold Atoms research group, my work was centred around simulating electromagnetic fields in MatLab and Python and their interactions with laser cooled atoms. The ultimate aim of the project is to use these fields to manipulate atoms into producing quantum networks that replicate energy flow in biological systems, such as photosynthesis.

I had two main responsibilities under this position. The primary responsibility was to undertake the transition of reading lists from traditional paper lists and online bullet-pointed lists to a new system aimed at better integration with library facilities. This involved accurately hand-typing out large quantities of data, presenting this in a clear and user-friendly manner and then giving training sessions to colleagues to use the new system. My secondary responsibility was to act on behalf of the postgraduate research administrator during a transition between staff. Here I was tasked with the day- to-day running of postgraduate research including liaising with staff, students and academics as well as maintaining the filing system, answering telephone & email queries and organising events including vivas and induction days.
