Refresh Your Maths Peer Mentor

Refresh Your Maths is a programme aimed at helping students from a non- STEM subject background to boost their general maths and numeracy skills. As a peer mentor, I: • Prepared, planned and led maths workshops • Provided 1-1 support online or in person when required • Promoted the programme and its benefits to students • Met regularly with the course instructors to give feedback on the workshops • Supported and participated in the evaluation process of the programme Through leading workshops, I have enhanced considerably my communication skills as I am required to present clearly new concepts and ideas to students who do not have a natural inclination towards the subject. In addition, regularly working with other members of my team when planning and preparing sessions, has significantly developed my ability to listen to and work collaboratively with others to produce the best outcome. During my first term as a peer mentor, I successfully delivered sessions to over 40 students and the programme as a whole supported almost 100 students. In the future, I aim to continue to actively help students and to further increase the total number that the programme supports.

Insurance Analyst - Summer Placement

• Worked as an insurance analyst in the underwriting team at British Gas Insurance (BGI) • Modelled impact of cold weather on claims frequency. This involved preparing model inputs and analysing their outputs • Developed a monthly reporting system for component defect as relevant to BGI. The report and data behind it helped to identify important deviations from normal behaviour.
