Undergraduate Student Researcher

Recovering Dispersion Measure Fluctuations from the Interstellar Medium - We examine Dispersion Measure fluctuations through time measured from pulsar emissions passing through interstellar mediums. With DM fluctuations being contaminated by noise and missing data points, we seek to overcome this by reconstructing the dataset using reconstruction algorithms built by one of my supervisors, Dr. Luke Pratley. In addition, we examine for potential lensing events caused by the ISM through spatial derivatives of the DM fluctuations over long timescales along with their associated intensities. Cross- correlation reveals moderate correlation between DM fluctuations and the intensity, suggestive for lensing due to the ISM. This research (thesis) project is co-supervised by Professor Ue-Li Pen and Dr. Luke Pratley.

Summer Research Intern

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Broadband Rotation Measure Synthesis - We applied new state-of-the-art reconstruction algorithms built by my supervisor, Dr. Luke Pratley, on real and simulated Faraday rotation signals for complex magnetized mediums observed over broad bandwidths. When reconstructing these complex magnetized structures, we noticed that it depends on the assumptions made about how complex the true signal is. Depending on the prior we choose, this can effect the results of the reconstruction. For my time in SURP, we tested the difference between assuming the structures are composed of small components (Dirac Delta) versus related complex components (Wavelets). We find that a Dirac prior works better for Faraday thin structures while a Wavelets prior works better for Faraday thick.

Taekwondo Assistant Instructor

As an assistant instructor, my main goal is to help the main instructor with various class activities as well as filling in for the main instructor when they are away or busy. This may include: running the class as per the curriculum; keeping students engaged during class; providing one-on-one assistance with students that need additional help; actively engage with new students to familiarize themselves with the class; preparing logistical arrangements for belt testing and evaluating student performance during belt testing.
