Medical Physics Intern

In this internship, I gained experience in the area of Nuclear Medicine, mainly in relation to instrumentation, logistics and radiological protection. I followed and learned how to perform some of the quality controls on SPECT machines and was guided by Professor Emerson Nobuyuki Itikawa (IF, UFG) and Doctor Whemberton Martins de Araújo (CDI, Nuclear Medicine unit) on projects involving medical images (duly anonymized) from the clinic. I helped with processing PET/CT images, making lung segmentation faster (using OsiriX), and creating a simple radiopharmacy inventory control spreadsheet. My TCC was born at this stage, with the project involving prediction of Alzheimer's cases from PET neuroimages, culminating in my first scientific publication.

Scientific Initiation

In this scientific initiation I was exposed to knowledge about electrographic signals such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) for training Machine Learning models (in Python), with the intention of automatically classifying the sleep phase of rats with or without pilocarpine- induced epilepsy. I was guided by professors Aline Priscila Pansani (ICB, UFG) and David Henriques da Matta (IME, UFG), who helped me understand the biology and predictive aspects of sleep phases as well as understand the training and validation of classification models . Regarding what was done, the classification features were extracted through Fourier transforms, applied using the biological signal processing software LabChart, and the classification models trained were two: Random Forest (for offline classification, or from spreadsheets data) and Logistic Regression (for online, or "live") classification. This last model in particular is very useful, as it will be used in automatic intervention experiments in specific phases of sleep in rats, to better understand the relationship between epilepsy (induced by pilocarpine) and sleep.

Statistics Intern

In this internship, with a scholarship from CNPq, I worked with a database containing bean productivity according to environmental variables (humidity, maximum and minimum temperatures, total solar radiation received, etc.), genotypic (with the genotypes duly coded ) and phenotypic (carioca and black beans), under multiple experiments. Throughout my work, I was guided by professors David Henriques da Matta, from the statistics, and Alexandre Bryan Heinemann, from agronomy. There were weekly meetings, in which they discussed the best way to model productivity based on the available variables. I was responsible for contributing by generating graphs that elucidated the issues discussed and also for the statistical modeling itself, always using the statistical programming language R. I had contact with linear models, generalized linear models and mixed models, and also learned about how to diagnose and interpret the residuals from these different models.
