TRIO McNair Scholars | Jul 2023 - Present

Research Fellowship

Through my TRIO McNair Scholars research fellowship, I utilized machine learning techniques to improve imaging quality in digital holographic microscopy. This powerful 3D visualization modality could enable more accurate quantitative analysis of specimen morphology, however, twin image noise presented a significant image quality challenge. My research involved developing and training deep neural networks on hologram data to perform reconstruction and suppression of these twin image artifacts. Additionally, I employed semantic segmentation algorithms to automatically delineate features of interest in the reconstructed images. Preliminary results demonstrated up to a 43% improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. This research exemplified how the integration of data science, computer vision, and microscopy could overcome key imaging challenges. The customized deep- learning solutions I developed further enhanced the analytical capabilities of digital holographic platforms for biomedical and materials science applications.My research involves developing and training deep neural networks on hologram data to perform reconstruction and suppression of these twin image artifacts.
