Associate Provost for Institutional Effectiveness, Strategic Planning and Assessment

Lead Allegheny to successful reaffirmation of Accreditation following 2023 Middle States Commission on Higher Education’s warning on insufficient evidence of academic assessment. Deployed Watermark Planning and Self-Study, established annual plan and reporting cycle for all academic programs, and developing consistent academic assessment at the course, program and institutional levels. Developing and implement college-wide data governance framework, organizing collaboration to collect, store, manage and analyze data from all units across the college. Acting as Institutional Research, including responsibility of reporting to governmental agencies (IPEDS, National Student Clearinghouse and PA DOE) and associations (NCAA, HEDS, and various ranking organizations). Responsible for ad hoc data requests from all constituents, including the President and Board of Trustees. Developing institutional dashboard for Strategic Initiatives associated with our Strategic Pathway. Collaborated with part-time faculty in CS and Econ to develop a machine learning model (Python and R, random forest) of 1st year retention, which we deployed through docker and shiny to student affairs staff.

Assistant Provost

Coordinated curriculum review and improvement process, the faculty-led assessment system, the capstone programs, and improved student learning through encouraging faculty development, representing the Provost on campus committees, and helped to coordinate work with admissions and other units of the college. Foreseeing instability in the merger with the non-profit Fedcap group, I chose to leave. On June 30, 2023, Fedcap pulled out of the merger.

Interim Executive Director for Faculty Affairs and Academic Information

Served as the departmental administrator for faculty in Developmental Programs (CARE, READ, UNIV, LEAD, and DIST) and faculty librarians. Under the direction of the Dean, ensured institutional and program goals alignment with college, division and university strategic priorities, assessment of instruction and student learning. Provided direct oversight of full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, departmental staff, and student assistants. Responsible for day-to-day departmental operations and contributed to long-term institutional planning while focusing on student success (e.g., enrollment, retention, course planning, graduation, program placement, etc.). Led the development of academic information involving data governance,  aggregation, access, visualization, dissemination and storage in partnership with thought leaders throughout the university. Facilitated data governance working groups to develop and recommend policies and practices to aid decision-making and reporting. Worked collaboratively and in close concert with Institutional Technology to advance standards, best practices, and tools to maximize the use of institutional data and foster a culture of continuous data quality improvement.

Director of the Honors Program

Provided comprehensive oversight, leadership, and direction to all facets of the university Honors Program serving 600-700 students. Oversaw administration of activities designed to support admissions, retention, fundraising, curriculum and faculty development, and assessment and completion. Led collaborative efforts with Alumni/ae Advisory Board and key stakeholders to create and deliver strategic five-year plans for the success of the program. Sourced and analyzed data regarding student admissions and retention to identify opportunities to increase diversity of program participants and implemented initiatives designed to increase student retention to program requirements. Succeeded in raising one-year retention-to-Honors from a seven-year average of approximately 70% to 77%. Developed reports, dashboards and data visualizations for multiple constituencies including Deans and Provost, Alumni Advisory Board, Honors Council, Honors faculty and Honors student governance. Defined Program values for increased transparency and direction by guiding Honors Student Council to design and institute the “Four Columns” initiative outlining Program’s guiding principles. Expanded university-wide Honors curriculum from a mere 10-credit curriculum to a full 22-credit curriculum that champions academic and intellectual success of participating students. Bolstered faculty governance of program with creation and launch of three new faculty committees focused on the admissions, assessment, and completion of the Honors Program.

Associate Professor of Philosophy

Promoted to tenured position within the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies in 2010 and chaired department from 2012 to 2013. Served as primary interface between department faculty and senior leadership for four full-time faculty members and 10-15 adjunct faculty members. Selected to serve as Director of the First Year Program, recruiting an average of 33 unique sections of first year seminar every year. Commended by executive leadership for creating a “sorting hat” algorithm that enabled the college to place students in first year seminars in a more equitable manner, diversifying the student (and faculty) experience.
