Altair Integrated Services | Sep 2019 - Nov 2019

Blockchain Application Developer in Analytics & Data Management

Altair Integrated Services is a fintech startup that provides IT consulting services and top talent acquisition to insurance and private equity companies. Worked closely with Charles Link, Altair's vice president of Analytics & Data Management, to develop an innovative new data security product that uses blockchain technology to protect personally identifiable information (PII) from unauthorized access and alteration: • Helped develop product specifications, use cases, and system architecture. • Researched existing applications of blockchain technology to data security. • Tested blockchain network implementation coded in Python and Flask for proof of concept. Unfortunately, new funding priorities put our project on hold. #StartupLife

Altair Integrated Services | May 2019 - Aug 2019

Lead Instructor for Modern Application Development Course

Worked closely with senior software developers/co-instructors Christopher Cooper and Vladimir Berns to develop a course curriculum on modern application development. Team-taught our new 8-week course to Altair's college interns. Course covered cloud computing with Azure (Cooper, 1 week); relational databases with Azure SQL Database (Berns, 1 week); web app development with Python/Flask/SQL (Chapman, 5 weeks); and business reporting with Power BI (Berns, 1 week). Interns and instructors worked together to complete two capstone projects tailored to our client's business requirements—a time tracker web app coupled with data analytics reports: • Designed a normalized relational database (3NF) with 8 data tables and 7 join tables in SQL. • Wrote SQL database API using 3 views, 10 joins, 7 stored procs, and 3 user- defined functions. • Coded business logic in Python and wrote API wrappers for SQL using 5 ODBC driver methods. • Built frontend with 8 Flask routes/views, 2 Flask-WTF forms, 5 Jinja templates, and 9 CSS styles. • Created 3 Power BI reports to extract/visualize useful information from raw data in Azure cloud. • Graphed monthly costs by department/project/worker based on times tracked in SQL database.

IXL Learning | May 2016 - Dec 2018

Mathematics Content Editor, Spec Writer, and Standards Aligner

The IXL Math product provides dynamic practice on thousands of math skills covering all grade levels (PK–12) and supports all the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math. • Ensured that math problems are clear, concise, correct, consistent, and grade-level appropriate. • Edited word problem scenarios to make them more realistic and engaging. • Wrote software specifications for math problem generators to add new skills to IXL website. • Aligned existing IXL math skills to state and international standards.

Khan Academy | May 2014 - Dec 2015

Mathematics Copy Editor & Article Writer

Khan Academy's video tutorials and online question banks cover all CCSS for K–12 math, plus university-level topics like calculus and differential equations. • Copy edited online math questions to ensure text and math are clear, concise, and correct. • Wrote and reviewed online math articles to complement online video tutorials. • Helped question authors and article writers with a wide variety of writing issues. • Authored a comprehensive guide to writing effective word problem scenarios.

Sapling Learning (Macmillan Learning) | Jul 2013 - Dec 2014

Mathematics Author & Reviewer

Sapling Learning aligns all math content with CCSS and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). • Wrote and reviewed original content for online textbooks on high school algebra and geometry. • Authored glossary definitions, theorems, proofs, derivations, detailed examples, and diagrams. • Created questions, diagrams, hints, feedback, and solutions for online question banks. • Reviewed my co-authors' work and taught best practices to new authors.

F.W. Chapman Solutions | Oct 2010 - Jun 2013

Freelance Computing Consultant

Owned and operated an interdisciplinary consulting firm for 3 years and served over 30 clients. Provided compelling visual design and advanced functionality to help small businesses sell their goods and services online. • Built dynamic websites/blogs on MySQL using WordPress content management system (CMS). • Customized/debugged HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP code in WordPress themes and plugins. • Processed e-commerce payments with First Data Global Gateway, Authorize.net, and PayPal. Also solved technical problems in nuclear physics for scientific/engineering clients: wrote Maple code to model a fusion reactor’s magnetic field and MATLAB code to clean atomic energy data. (For more details, see Education: Independent Study & Business Practicum, 2008–2011, below.)

Drexel University | Sep 2006 - Aug 2008

Visiting Professor of Computer Science

Course coordinator for Drexel's first college-wide Computation Lab, a three- course sequence taken by all first-year engineering students. Used Maple computer algebra system to teach computer programming, symbolic-numeric computation, scientific visualization, computer simulation, and data analysis. • Led a team comprised of a dozen faculty members and teaching assistants. • Expanded lab from pilot project for 70 students into college-wide offering for 700 students. • Integrated Maple TA into course to automate testing/assessment via online quizzes and exams. • Implemented robust Maple TA grading algorithms to eliminate manual grading of 2,100 exams.

University of Waterloo | Sep 2005 - Aug 2006

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computer Science

Collaborated with Maple co-inventor Prof. Keith O. Geddes to investigate the computational properties of Geddes series expansions via experiments in Maple. • Invented, classified, and named 139,656 different types of Geddes series expansions. • Laid groundwork for convergence theory of Geddes-Newton series for positive-definite kernels. Achieved first result by combining p = 48 univariate interpolation problem types with t = 10 linear integral transforms to generate C(p⋅[t+1]+1, 2) = 139,656 series types. Second result led us to series of research breakthroughs presented by Prof. Geddes in his invited conference talk at SNSC'08.

University of Waterloo | Sep 2003 - Aug 2005

Adjunct Professor of Applied Mathematics

Taught one science/engineering calculus course per trimester for five consecutive trimesters. • Gave lectures, held office hours, created exams, wrote solutions, supervised teaching assistants. • Received very favorable teaching evaluations and heartfelt thank-you notes from my students. Also co-supervised Orlando A. Carvajal's master's thesis with Prof. Geddes —the first in a series of Waterloo computer science theses implementing, in Maple, new computational methods that I invented. • Proposed thesis topic, met for 2 hours per week for a year, and proofread all thesis drafts. • Mr. Carvajal's graduation day was a proud day for me, too.

Lehigh University | Oct 1986 - Jun 1995

Consultant / Senior Consultant in Computing Center
