Head of Data, Analytics, Automation & AI

Built ION’s first data, analytics, and AI function. Scaled it into a central engine powering growth, commercial insight, and operational efficiency. What I did • Hired and grew a 20-person data team covering analytics, data engineering, AI, and automation • Centralised fragmented data sources into a unified enterprise data lake (in Databricks) • Delivered Power BI self-service analytics to 300+ users • Built ML models across churn, lead scoring, cross-sell, anomaly detection, segmentation, survival analysis, and LLM-based automation • Partnered with product, sales, and exec teams to turn analytics into action Impact • Established AI and data as a core part of ION’s go-to-market and product innovation strategy • Reduced operational inefficiency, improved forecasting accuracy, and increased revenue conversion • Created the foundations for scale during a multi-year M&A-driven expansion

Post Acquisition Integration

Led the end-to-end integration of Backstop Solutions following its acquisition by ION. What I did • Consolidated systems, operations, and commercial models across both entities • Unified engineering and IT infrastructure • Aligned revenue reporting, client contracting, and sales operations • Redeployed talent across Product, Client Services, and Central teams while preserving domain expertise Impact • Reduced non-personnel costs by 50 percent • Created a unified, integrated operating model within 100 days • Simplified organisational complexity and improved delivery pace

Post Acquisition Integration

ION Analytics united Dealogic (acquired for $870M), Acuris (acquired for $1.7B), and Selerity into a single intelligence platform serving global banks, investors, law firms, and corporates. I was brought in to align operations, unify data, and drive delivery across the newly merged organisation. What I did • Re-architected sales territories, incentives, and revenue planning • Standardised operational workflows through automation and lean process design • Centralised fragmented datasets into a unified analytics ecosystem • Embedded delivery discipline across the merged organisation Impact • Increased transparency and execution speed • Enabled the newly merged entity to operate as a single platform • Powered real-time reporting and advanced machine learning models across the business

Built a new services organisation to onboard, support, and scale value for the world’s top investment banks. Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Led the full digital transformation of a legacy print directory into a modern digital business. What I did • Managed a 100-person engineering and technology team • Oversaw $16M Opex and $10M Capex • Replaced SAP, legacy CRM, and manual systems with cloud-based SaaS • Built BI capability and automated core workflows • Launched new digital product and service lines Impact • Modernised the entire technology estate • Enabled new revenue models and reduced operational costs • Repositioned the business for long-term digital growth

Cisco | Jan 2012 - Aug 2014

Member of Cisco's Global Advisory Board

During the redevelopment of Eden Park for the Rugby World Cup, I led delivery of one of the first large-scale “Connected Stadium” transformations. The programme became a global showcase for Cisco’s Sports and Entertainment group and led to my appointment to their Global Advisory Board. What I delivered • Designed and deployed an integrated stadium technology platform covering networking, security, IPTV, digital signage, WiFi, ticketing, and real-time analytics • Demonstrated how sensors, data pipelines, and connectivity could improve crowd safety, operational efficiency, and event experience • Developed early AI-enabled analytics using sensor and operational data to forecast crowd flows and optimise staffing and incident response • Orchestrated complex vendor, partner, and stakeholder ecosystems across a $250M redevelopment • Represented the programme globally, presenting at Cisco conferences and industry forums on connected venues and real-time operational intelligence Impact • Established Eden Park as one of the most technologically advanced stadiums in the Southern Hemisphere • Shaped Cisco’s global Sports and Entertainment strategy and influenced deployments across major international venues • Proved an early blueprint for how AI, automation, and real-time data systems must work together in high-scale environments

Eden Park, New Zealand | Dec 2009 - Aug 2014

Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Eden Park underwent a significant redevelopment (~$250m), in preparation for hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2011. I led the $19M technology transformation for the stadium. What I did • Built and led the PMO for the technology transformation • Delivered integrated digital infrastructure across CCTV, POS, IPTV, WiFi, LAN, ticketing, and signage • Implemented early intelligent video analytics and automated crowd monitoring • Managed day-to-day operational tech during the World Cup • Represented NZ internationally at global sports tech events Impact • Created one of the most connected stadiums in the Southern Hemisphere • Improved fan experience, operational insight, and event resilience • Delivered mission-critical systems flawlessly during a global event

The University of Auckland | Feb 1995 - Dec 1995

R Tester

During my undergraduate studies in statistics, I had the opportunity to work with Robert Gentleman and Ross Ihaka, the creators of the R programming language. My role involved testing early versions of R, providing feedback on usability, and contributing to discussions that shaped one of the world’s most widely used data science tools. This formative experience cemented my interest in data and analytics, and gave me a front-row seat to the birth of a language that would power the future of statistical computing.

Lion Nathan | Jan 1992 - Dec 1995

Business Analyst

Selected into Lion Nathan’s graduate induction programme while completing a dual BCom/BSc degree. Worked part-time across multiple business units - including Lion Breweries, Liquor King, Super Liquor, and NZ Wines & Spirits - gaining hands-on experience in retail, wholesale, and distribution environments. Eventually transitioned into a Business Analyst role, supporting data-driven decision-making across supply chain, sales, and operations.

Passionate about data science. I studied statistics as an undergraduate and started using R back in the mid-1990s. More than 30 years later, I’m still learning and still excited by how the field keeps evolving.
