Recently acquired by KPMG, SECOR Group was Canada's largest independent strategy consultancy, with offices in Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Vancouver, New York, and Paris. Ian advised clients in the communication, media, and entertainment industries, and helped public and private companies improve their capacities for innovation and develop strategies for value-creating growth. Projects included: - Innovation program design: For the Canadian subsidiary of a top-tier global marketing firm, led a capability diagnosis that identified innovation strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently led the design of a program aimed at generating and managing a sustained pipeline of innovative ideas from creation through commercialization, and at nurturing a firm-wide culture of innovation. - Strategic review of industry: For the association representing Canada's leading video game publishers and developers, led a project to profile the $1.7 billion Canadian video game industry. Oversaw the development and execution of a primary research survey, managed client relations and project delivery, and acted as lead author on a final report that was covered in the national media and presented by the client at an Empire Club luncheon.

As a principal at Hugessen, Ian advised boards on executive compensation and related governance issues, offering a holistic perspective drawing on his experience in corporate strategy, business transformation, and performance measurement. He spoke regularly on compensation and governance matters at industry conferences and panels.

Founded in 1975 in Montreal, SECOR is Canada's largest independent strategy consultancy, with offices in Toronto, Montreal, New York, and Paris. Projects included: - Strategy development: For the $750 million Canadian subsidiary of a global mining firm, led the development of a long-term strategy for maximizing the value of the subsidiary to the parent company. - New business planning & modelling: For a $1 billion Canadian media company, led the development of a business plan and financial model for the start-up and operation of an online market offering that leverages the company’s existing consumer brands. - Market opportunity assessment: For a $5 billion+ Canadian company, led the definition and assessment of a $500 million to $1 billion market opportunity in the book distribution industry.

Technology Architect

IT architect, project manager, and expert in the area of network management systems. Sold and managed multiple technology & process implementation projects at Bell Canada in support of cutting-edge communication services like MPLS VPN and managed enterprise VoIP. Developed OSS roadmap and provided ongoing IT architecture advice. Other projects included IT process assessment and pricing strategy analysis for major Canadian companies in the broadcasting and retail industries, respectively. Also planned and deployed a four-week curriculum to train consultants for eCommerce engagements, as the primary component of a Canadian eCommerce "Centre of Excellence“.

Founded and edited a quarterly magazine covering politics, economics, culture, and science. Managed all aspects of the business; hired and trained one art director and one assistant editor & circulation director. Developed all business and production processes; managed several direct marketing campaigns. Magazine received coverage on CBC Newsworld and CBC Radio, in Globe & Mail, others. After first year of operations, solicited and won a three- year, $405,000 grant from a private foundation.
