Pearson | Feb 2021 - Oct 2021

Data Scientist (secondment)

Developed Bayesian hierarchical models to predict GCSE Maths, Science and English grade boundaries using performance data from 0.5 million candidates, driving 20-30 times improvement in accuracy. Worked with accreditation, standards and statistical intelligence teams to approve the model. Created grading solution to provide reliable just-in-time grade boundaries for GCSE Maths & Science custom tests on a new online learning environment (23 times improvement on previous approach; 0.4% error), including devising an algorithm to determine which boundaries to report, solving a difficult implementation problem. Collaborated with UX designers, product managers and technical product owners to establish valid and useful assessments and insights reporting measures for reporting dashboards on a new online learning platform.

Content and Learning Specialist

Significantly improved the validity of indicative grade boundaries across science assessment resources. Developed a new approach to grade calculation using performance data from the entire GCSE cohort and negotiated with internal stakeholders to adopt the method on all Pearson ActiveLearn science tests. Devised algorithm to grade custom science assessments for KS3 and KS4 on Assessment Builder, driving 15 times improvement in accuracy. As editorial lead, resolved significant legacy issues in the 2nd edition Edexcel GCSE Science end of unit tests (135 assessments) and markedly improved the quality of the assessments to unanimously positive customer feedback.
