Data Analyst, Clinical Informatics

As the Clinical Informatics Scientist of the Data-IT Support Group, I provide technical and informatics support to all clinical laboratories at DCLS. My former role as a Clinical scientist has prepared me to serve as Liaison between Lab Groups and Software developers, where I collect Lab requests, conduct data analysis, and provide Summaries to IT Staff. I am also a technical expert in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), electronic messaging, and standardized vocabulary assignment (LOINC, SNOMED, PHLIP coding). I also routinely conduct troubleshooting and User Acceptance Testing for Lab software applications, where I will identify any issues found, and report my findings to program developers. I compile and clean lab data, interpret clinical protocols, and summarize results into efficient Visualizations and Visio workflows for presentations to Senior Management. Per Lab Group request, I create customized automated Excel spreadsheets, utilizing technologies such as VBA programming, Macros, VLOOKUP formulas, conditional formatting, and dependent dropdown lists. As a User Accounts Manager, I authorize and update User access for several internal and external employee applications. I create instructional Job Aids for use during app launches, and perform annual audit reviews when needed. I also operate as Web Manager for the DCLS website, and provide updates to Site information and documentation, using the Episerver Content Management System and HTML Coding.

Senior Scientist, Molecular Genomics

I was a senior member of Lab Operations with responsibilities for the regulatory and scientific conduct of development and validation projects. I analyzed data and presented findings, and routinely acted as a technical project lead for assigned projects, and interacted with Group Management and Pharmaceutical Clients, providing progress updates on various projects and results summaries. I was a member of the Molecular Genomics Department, with focus on development, validation, and processing of Molecular Biology assays for Clinical Sample Testing from Pharmaceutical Clients. My Lab focus was on performing sequencing confirmation assays and qPCR Multiplex Assay for Clinical Trial projects. I supervised and trained Junior Staff daily on Lab techniques and Data Analysis. I was the Power User over Electronic Lab Notebook software development for my department, where I compiled requirements for new Methods, diagrammed Visio Workflows, designed and tested new templates, and received Final approval for numerous Clinical Trial Projects.

Scientist I

I was employed by the State of Virginia, within the Division of Consolidated Lab Services (DCLS). As a member of the Emergency Response Division, I performed testing for numerous Biothreat real-time PCR Assays. I received safety-certification training into restricted BSL-3 laboratory environments, specializing in processing of high-level specimens for presence of Biological agents. I also processed patient samples from arrival to final results for our CLIA-certified Molecular Biology Lab, then communicated findings to medical facilities and State Health Department Epidemiologists.

I operated as a Scientist II of the Research and Development Division for the Molecular Biology Department of a Contract Research Organization. I was part of a group comprised of several veteran Scientists who operated across several Client contracts at any given time. My responsibilities included: drafting methods and price quotes for contracts, assessing Lab capabilities and preparing for incoming Contract requirements, DNA/RNA isolations, Real-Time PCR, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis, DNA/RNA Quantification, Sanger Sequencing, Sequencing Analysis, Microbiological Media Preparation, Bacteriological Techniques, Microbiological Colony Isolation, Gram Staining, Microorganism Identification, Good Laboratory Practices, GLP Notation and Documentation, Report Writing, Writing and Revising Standard Operating Procedures.

I operated as the Molecular Lead for laboratory activities, including supervising one RAII employee, performed PCR Testing and DNA Sequencing on frequently tight deadlines, conducted sample processing and experiment report writing, and maintained Molecular Biology instruments and lab spaces. I also served as the Lead Technician for sample preparation for next-generation DNA Sequencing project, and performed Sequencer instrument operation and maintenance.

I performed analysis of environmental samples for nucleic acid detection of agents including extraction of RNA/DNA samples, quantitative detection, pyrosequencing confirmation, and conventional DNA sequencing. I received formal training for Molecular instruments, including the ABI PRISM 7900HT Sequence Detection System, Biotage 96MA PSQ Pyrosequencer, ABI 3130xL Genetic Analyzer, and the ABI Voyager MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer.
