U.S. Department of the Treasury | Jun 2012 - Aug 2012

Department Intern

Despite the absurd heat, my time in D.C. is one of my favorite memories from college. Just outside the Treasury there‘s a statue of Alexander Hamilton, and I spent many of my short lunch breaks staring up at the founding father. Often enough, Treasury staff would offer their commentary on the statue and Hamilton’s financial policies with the characteristic confidence of a D.C. politico. Inside the Treasury, I wasn’t fetching coffee, but I wasn’t exactly setting economic policies either—my responsibilities were somewhere in-between. During the evenings that summer, I studied two courses at Georgetown: Comparative Economic Systems and Constitutional Law. These required a lot of reading not only from textbooks but newspapers too—we were quizzed on how the theories in the books could help explain current events reported in the newspapers. As an intellectually curious sophomore, I could not have asked for a more rewarding experience that summer—and frankly I’m excited to have simply survived the heat.
