Master Research project

Thesis title: The role of Inflammatory Cytokines in Course of Depression after Antidepressant Discontinuation (Supervised by Prof. Quentin Huys) Research outpouts: to assess the relevance of cytokine levels (TNF-α, IL6, IL-10, TGF-ß1, CRP) with depression relapse after antidepressant treatment by analysing data from the AIDA study through generating MATLAB regression models for prediction and analysis. Key findings: results suggest little predictive power of cytokines for depression relapse post-antidepressant discontinuation. However, variations in pro- inflammatory TNF-α levels appear to be notably associated with both depression status and ADM discontinuation, aligning with the current literature on the cytokine theory of depression. Our study highlights the relevance of cytokine in understanding of depression, paving the way for future research in personalised treatment strategies.

Summer research studentship

Thesis title: Testing the specificity of pharmacological tools in the study of calcium-activated chloride channels (Supervised by Dr. M. Stocker and Prof. P. Pedarzani (Neuroscience, Physiology and Pharmacology department) Research outputs: I was awarded a competitive Physiology Society studentship. I used whole-cell patch-clamp electrophysiology on HEK293 cells expressing rSK2 to assess cross-reactivity of TMEM16A-targeted compounds (Ani9, Eact) with KCa-SK2 channels. I produced a 7,000-word dissertation and was awarded a First-class grade. Key Findings: TMEM16A compounds did not affect KCa-SK2 mediated currents, supporting their specificity as tools for studying Ca2+-activated chloride channels in the CNS.
