Verisk - extreme event solutions | Apr 2021 - Dec 2023

Senior Scientist I at Verisk

● Research Project Manager for the release of the Verisk severe thunderstorm cat risk model for the United States in Touchstone and Touchstone Re in June 2022. My primary achievements in this role were: -Designed new workflow using R and shell scripting to parallelize creation of model deliverables, reducing processing time from 14 days to less than 3 hours -Successfully generated and provided deliverables to downstream teams, including Product Team and Software Development Group, to ensure model implementation was completed on schedule -Introduced the updated Verisk U.S. severe thunderstorm cat model’s hazard component at the Verisk Envision Conference (April 2022) and the Farm Bureau Actuarial Conference (July 2022) -Worked with wind engineers to document sources of loss change associated with the model update, facilitating clients’ understanding of model output ● Collaborated with the Verisk Consulting and Client Services Group to prepare written reports for clients on tight deadlines ● Defended the Verisk severe thunderstorm cat models for the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia, in face-to-face and virtual client meetings ● Developed R scripts to generate statistical distributions of hail swath attributes from radar-tracked swaths, and validated these distributions against observations ● Performed exploratory analysis of radar reflectivity and time series of hail, wind, and tornado reports to determine new targets for stochastic modeling of severe thunderstorm outbreaks ● Deciphered and updated code (R, Python, Java) written by previous team members to perform time-critical tasks, including claims analysis, aggregation of storm reports, and preparation of tornado occurrence probability maps, in the absence of adequate documentation ● Helped onboard new team members ● Taught severe thunderstorm class for Extreme Event Solutions Certified Extreme Event Modeler Program (CEEM) ● Received the Extreme Event Solutions “Communicator of the Year” Award in 2022

Verisk - extreme event solutions | Jul 2015 - Mar 2021

Scientist II

● Performed time series analysis of meteorological station data (sustained and gust wind speeds) and used these data to augment extratropical cyclone footprints generated by Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models ● Developed R scripts to calculate exceedance probabilities of loss for simulated and observed severe thunderstorm outbreaks and extratropical cyclones to assist with modeled loss validation ● Designed and implemented geospatial workflow in R to validate modeled loss footprints against claims data ● Compiled, cleaned, and analyzed historical tornado damage reports and leveraged these data to develop improved outbreak footprints and characteristics ● Supported client questions on the Verisk severe thunderstorm cat models for the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia

Verisk - extreme event solutions | Apr 2015 - Jul 2015

Senior Science/Technical Writer

● Wrote technical model documentation, marketing brochures, and AIR Currents articles (see publication list below) describing the scientific foundation of earthquake, tropical cyclone, agriculture, and infectious disease catastrophe models ● Created workflow to compile materials for technical documents and proactively collaborated with members of hazard, engineering, QA, and software development groups to ensure model documentation was completed on schedule to accompany software releases ● Developed R and SQL scripts for data analysis and preparing documentation exhibits

Verisk - extreme event solutions | Sep 2011 - Apr 2015

Science/Technical Writer

● Edited and formatted text and prepared figures for technical documents describing the scientific foundation of earthquake, tropical cyclone, agriculture, and infectious disease catastrophe models ● Wrote publications for AIR Worldwide online magazine AIR Currents ● Wrote and edited marketing brochures for AIR catastrophe models ● Earned AIR Certified Extreme Event Modeler (CEEM) certification
