Muridae Health Research | Nov 2018 - Present

Senior Biostatistician

Provided 2000+ hours of expert biostatistician consulting for 70+ studies without in-house statistician support, resulting in more than 90% being accepted for presentation at academic conferences and nine being accepted or published to peer-reviewed journals. Publications have resulted in real world changes for management of breast cancer in British Columbia. Managed up to 13 concurrent research projects and provided on-demand services with rapid turnaround to meet urgent timelines as short as 2 business days from receipt of data to abstract submission deadline. Services encompass the entirety of the research process from study design to publication, and include strategic recommendations on consolidated data management to facilitate future studies. Utilized predictive modelling and computational methods, including classification, regression, clustering, advanced statistical modelling techniques, and machine learning principles to develop a series of decision- support tools. These tools assist surgical oncologists with risk assessment and facilitate informed patient decision-making in their own care.

BC Cancer | Sep 2018 - Aug 2020

Senior Business Analyst

Synthesized big data analytics with business-end requirements to produce evidence-based solutions for major healthcare capital projects with budgets in the million to billion dollars range. Projects included: (1) the construction of the largest cancer centre in the province at Cloverdale, which will deliver comprehensive cancer care to tens of thousands of cancer patients annually; (2) expansion of diagnostic imaging services including a new PET/CT on Vancouver Island which will deliver 2,200 additional scans per year to island residents; and (3) the renovation and replacement of critical infrastructure to deliver radiation therapy in BC, and a planned 94% expansion in capacity to deliver radiation therapy by 2040. Consulted directly with senior and executive leadership at BC Cancer and PHSA, multidisciplinary clinician practice leaders, leadership at regional health authorities, and stakeholders at the BC Ministry of Health to compile a 20-year provincial cancer strategy that maps comprehensively and at a high level the timeline for necessary investments to build cancer care capacity that will meet the anticipated surging demand for cancer care services in BC. Developed a visual dashboard enabling executive leadership to track an exhaustive and otherwise challenging to manage list of ongoing capital projects throughout the province. The dashboard facilitated real-time updates between project managers deployed at hospitals and clinics throughout BC and decision makers at the upper management and executive levels.

BC Cancer | Jun 2010 - Aug 2018

Research Analyst

Facilitated clinical trials in collaboration with Amgen and Novartis to provide additional lines of systemic therapy to cancer patients. Maintained detailed documentation of adverse events, communications with clinician and pharmaceutical stakeholders, and supported Clinical Research Associates and Auditors during site visits. Identified an opportunity to improve clinical trials recruitment by actively flagging eligible studies for medical oncologists, and designed then implemented a four-month intervention at a regional teaching hospital to improve accrual. The intervention successfully identified 120 potentially eligible patients, resulting in 19 patients being enrolled (19.7% increase) and four who declined compared to the previous four months. Reviewed medical charts for cancer patients referred to BC Cancer, and provided statistician support for the analyses and publication of studies. Published 11 manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, presented at 12 international academic conferences, and won the Merit Award ($1,000 USD) from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology as well as receiving the Novartis Oncology Young Investigator Award two times ($10,000 CAD combined). Architected interdepartmental databases utilized by multiple regional cancer hospitals across the province, including: (1) a clinical trials management database for storing approval, recruitment, and financial data; (2) a specimen sample database to tack the storage location of all blood and tumor samples collected for the BC Cancer Gastrointestinal Cancers Blood and Tumor Bank; and (3) a radiology database that facilitated automated grading and staging of cancer based on measurements entered by radiologists and the RECIST criteria.
