Data Research Analyst

* Performed statistical analysis and modelling on historical census data (Canadian Census, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901). * Designed, implemented and maintained the People in Motion (PiM) project database. Migrated the database from Microsoft Access to PostgreSQL. Eliminated redundancies from the original design. * Designed and developed the ETL processes for the PiM database. * Designed and developed an empirical step-wise refinement method for linking records between two data sets. ** Applied the method to linking records casualties from World War I to the corresponding soldier records, with a linkage rate of 97%. ** Refined and tuned the method to link records from census data sets, with a linkage rate of 94–98%. * Designed and developed an automated method for encoding people names, optimized for resilience to the inaccuracies inherent to historical data. Generated codes for approx. 450,000 names, with a True Positive / False Positive rate of 89%. * Designed and developed an automated method for re-creating family information, applicable to links checking. This method increased the speed (in the number of links verified) by a factor of 4x. * Designed an automated process to extract tens of thousands of data tables from historical Police Gazette files and convert them to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. This resulted in a successful grant application: $34,000 Australian Dollars have been granted by the Australian Government for extraction of such tables from Tasmanian Police Gazettes.

University of Toronto | Jan 2004 - Aug 2010

Lecturer

* Lectured over 1,400 Computer Science and Engineering students in Introduction to Databases, Database System Technology, Web Programming and Software Engineering. * Managed groups of teaching assistants, ranging in size from 1 to 10; very high retaining rate of TAs. * Supervised 5 students to completing their diploma thesis / graduation projects. * Introduced XQuery as a new topic in the curriculum, offering students a great exposure to a new and exciting technology. Used it for a large real-data-based assignment (www.clinicaltrials.org). * Developed extensive course content and supplemental materials, with emphasis in improving their success rate. * Switched from IBM DB2 to open source PostgreSQL, providing students with plenty work flexibility.

University of Toronto | Sep 2000 - Dec 2003

Research Scientist

* Designed and implemented structural query optimization rules for XQuery. Reduced the query evaluation time by 60–95%. * Formulated and proved the strongly-normalizing theorem for the structural query optimization rules. * Designed heuristics for semantic query optimization in XQuery. Formulated and proved the usability theorem for these heuristics.

Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy | Oct 1998 - Aug 2000

Junior Assistant Professor

* Lectured Board-certified doctors in Introduction to Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics. * Explored various multimedia applications and their usability in the classroom.

Nethrom | Feb 1997 - Sep 1997

Software Engineer

* Financial Application development in Progress. * Report generation in Crystal Reports.
