Through the Identity N' Impact Funding Program from the City of Toronto, I launched 'Women in STEM (WIS)' to provide female youth in underserved communities from Toronto opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering and math fields while also sharing tools/resources to deal with racial and systemic inequities. This program is expected to run from Januray 2020 - December 2020, with a group of 13 female youth between the ages of 15 - 25.

Program Mentor

Through a grant from the Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) - Ontario Trillium Foundation, we provide digital literacy and entrepreneurial education to low- income, racialized youth in Toronto. As a program mentor, I adapted a curriculum to teach youth how to effectively use computer software (Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Google Suite), social media tools, coding and planning the final youth project competition.

Youth Health Ambassador

In my role, I explore and take action on current and emerging health and tobacco issues through raising awareness and advocating for healthy public policy. Most notably, I was invited as a speaker to the Ontario Health Ministers Roundtable for Youth Vaping and the Legislative Assembly of Ontario Press Conference on the 'Vaping is Not for Kids' bill to share proposed changes which will be coming into effect on July 1, 2020. I have also advocated for policy changes at the Toronto Board of Health about changing hookah/shisha by-laws (2017) and increasing movie ratings of new movies with smoking impressions in them (2019), of which both motions were carried forward for approval and implementation. Through YHAN, we have developed knowledge translation tools such as 'Youth Mental Health Facilitation Guide' and 'Smoking in Multi-Unit Housing Guide' for use by our stakeholders, advocated for Smoke-Free Campuses, developed 'Street Buzz' interviews of youth on current health issues and coordinating the smoke-free policy at the Pan Am and Para Pan Am Games (2015).

Diabetes Prevention Facilitator

As a Diabetes Prevention Facilitator, with the support of Toronto Public Health, I facilitated a series of educational and engaging workshops on diabetes prevention for those who do not currently have diabetes and at-risk participants. Some topics covered were: prevention of type 2 diabetes, active living, eating healthy, menu planning, and stress management. More specifically: - Led sessions of approx. 2 hours/ week for 8 weeks in winter and spring on topics of diabetes prevention and healthy living to our community of predominantly south Asian’s - Attended a three-day training from Toronto Public Health nurses on work plans setting our program objectives and methods to use in facilitation and leading - Personalized the diabetes prevention material for the target community via translation of materials, discussing food specific to the cultures attending, and engaging participants through hands-on sessions (i.e. cooking class, exercise sessions)

Research Assistant

I initiated and conducted research on the level of economic outcomes (jobs, employment, savings) and personal finance knowledge and systemic barriers to acquiring accurate knowledge among underprivileged youth in Toronto. I conducted the research using quantitative and qualitative research methods (SPSS), developed REB documentation and consent forms, recruited participants, developed and conducted focus groups, surveys and semi- structured interviews, transcribed study data, and maintained research records. My team and I presented the findings in a final research report and presentation for community stakeholders (youth workers, managers, and local politicians) to initiate change for access to opportunities in the community. The research report was published in the peer-reviewed Journal for Worldwide Holistic Sustainable Development (JWHSD) on 5th volume in June 2019.

Research And Administrative Assistant

Reporting to the Interim Executive Director, I provided critical research and administrative support to the AAC activities and projects, liaised with key stakeholders (i.e. The Arthritis Society, Canadian Rheumatology Association, Arthritis Consumer Experts, Arthritis Research Canada, industry partners, etc.) for Canada-wide projects. I also coordinated and organized the AAC research awards and the Annual Conference in Toronto. Some of my other responsibilities included data analysis and coding for ongoing research projects, creating knowledge translation research materials, strategies and tools to be used by practitioners and patients in both English and French. I also authored executive summaries and monthly newsletters on current advances in arthritis research for publication and distribution among stakeholders and on the AAC website.

In my research at the Krembil Research Institute at Toronto Western Hospital/ UHN, I researched 20+ biomarkers of psoriatic arthritis in patients with psoriasis and its potential in monitoring disease activity. I was one of the only undergraduate students in my department to present my findings at the Krembil Seminar Series and recognized as one of the top thesis projects in the university department.

In my role, I facilitated in a Phase II ultrasound reliability study, involving a team of rheumatologists and patients with rheumatoid or psoriatic arthritis. I assisted with data collection, entry and analysis to determine where there was a significant visual difference between the two types of arthritis.

Youth Eliminates Smoking (YES) | Sep 2010 - Dec 2017

Co-Founder, Youth Leader

Co-founded and initiated the first youth initiative of its type in the neighborhood on anti-tobacco to empower youth, raise awareness on tobacco use, tobacco prevention and motivate you to make healthy lifestyle choices • Formulated grant proposals which has continuously resulted in receiving funding from public institutions like Toronto Public Health for the past 10 years • Organized events such as Annual World No Tobacco Day celebrations, weekly/annual youth sports tournaments, workshops and skills development seminars, movie reviews to assess smoking/tobacco impressions, high school campaigns, weekly movie and game nights, and advocacy petitions. • Between 2010-2017, engaged 2000+ community members in YES events • Created a network of dedicated and talented youth volunteers, with a successful social media outreach (425 people on YES facebook page) • Established a “No Tobacco Policy” during any sports and recreational events hosted by YES and partner organizations across Toronto • Recognized as an important smoking cessation and prevention program by the City of Toronto and Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Canada
