I am the owner of Deserts Deep, LLC, a company providing cutting-edge training for clients at many levels in multiple areas. After completing a Ph.D. in Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education, I expanded the original scope of Deserts Deep (scuba, caving, hiking, and other outdoor skills) to include instructional design and implementation in areas as diverse as corporate training, adult learning, GMP, biosafety, biosecurity, and project management. In the future, Deserts Deep looks to not only aid clients in developing and implementing training programs, but to also engage in cutting edge research into the efficacy of training models. Most recently, Desert Deep has consulted with Vibeke Halkjaer-Knudsen to begin to provide services in the area of Biological Risk Management.

Joined The ASK Academy during the start-up phase, prior to the start of the first year of teaching. Collaboratively worked to create the educational program that would best meet the intent of the Academy mission and vision, as outlined in the state approved charter. Lead responsibility for the development of physical sciences and engineering curriculum. Responsible for verifying alignment of curriculum to Common Core and Next Generation standards Developed, recruited, and provided leadership for ASK robotics team. Responsible for procurement of materials and for arranging travel for myself and students to in-state and out of state competitions and for visits to schools. Provided multiple opportunities for students to obtain experiences outside of the traditional school setting. Used these opportunities as a springboard for developing new programs. Responsible, as Level III teacher and department chair, to lead the Secondary Science Department of Carlsbad Municipal Schools. Took the lead in conducting an internal evaluation of the secondary science programs in Carlsbad Municipal Schools to verify compliance with the New Mexico Science Standards and Benchmarks. As an educational leader and member of the District Accreditation Committee, evaluated curriculum for alignment with New Mexico Standards and Benchmarks. Determined the need for additional courses and for cancelling of existing courses that did not meet needs. Responsible for writing grants to support student activities and professional development. Developed hands-on earth science curriculum to better engage middle school students in learning. Provided leadership in after-school and extracurricular activities. Taught “Methods of Teaching Elementary School Science” class as a part of the NMSU pre-service program for pre-service elementary school teachers Developed ‘Methods’ course for pre-service elementary school teachers that focused on project based, interdisciplinary, themed activities in the elementary classroom. Provided interactive instruction centered on discussion of weekly readings, student participation in activities presented as examples of what was being taught, and in the student development of project based, interdisciplinary activities and instructional units. All activities were shared among students and provided a portfolio of instructional materials from which the teachers would eventually draw in their own classrooms.

Developed curriculum for and taught geoscience courses as a part of the engineering management program for College of the Southwest. Prepared pre-service environmental engineers and engineering managers to deal with surface water and groundwater hydrology issues as well as evaluation of potential geologic hazards.

Developed and coordinated extracurricular activities to encourage science literacy in students. Founding member of Realistic Applied Technology Symposium (RATS). Program brought students from multiple school districts together to collaborate in a day of scientific inquiry in which the focus was building connections, rather than competition. Responsible for the preparation of monthly presentations given by the WIPP DOE Deputy Project Manager to the Albuquerque Operations Office of the Department of Energy. Responsible for preparation of the annual WIPP budget and accounting responsibility to the Department of Energy and Congress. Developed multiple presentations in support of DOE and Westinghouse management. Developed financial tracking system, tying budget and costs to construction schedules and progress. Attended CSCS/C training at West Valley Nuclear Services in West Valley, NY. Performed quality checks to assure project compliance with DOE orders. Prepared revision of the WIPP Project Plan for submission to congress by DOE management.

Evaluated construction and plant operational status to determine potential need for modifications or additional construction needed prior to full-scale operation.
