Research Assistant - New England multifunctional farming operations

-Wrote MATLAB scripts to analyze farm survey data for an agritourism study conducted by Dr. Chyi-Lyi Liang on multifunctional farming operations in New England (Summer 2012) -Co-presented the in-progress results of the study with Dr. Liang at the 2013 Federal Reserve System community development research conference This research study focused on identifying the ways in which New England small farms develop a diversified profile, and how small farmers contribute to sustainability and resilience within their community. The findings of this study were used in the Farm Bill to help protect small, diversified farms. Below is a paper summarizing the study, which was presented at the 2012 Agriculture and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) annual meeting in Seattle, Washington.

University of Vermont | Aug 2008 - May 2010

Student Researcher

Under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Kindstedt and Pallavi Rajbhandari, I conducted a two-year study to determine the effects of temporarily storing Cheddar cheese at room temperature prior to long-term refrigeration on calcium lactate crystallization. The study showed that temporarily exposing Cheddar cheese to elevated temperatures could help prevent calcium lactate crystal formation and growth on Cheddar cheese during long-term storage, which suggests new potential in using a temperature treatment during cheese production for reducing calcium lactate crystallization. The results of the study were presented at the 2009 and 2010 Vermont State Science and Mathematics Fair, the 2009 and 2010 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), and the 2010 American Society of Animal Science Joint Annual Meeting.
