Willow Biosciences | Dec 2021 - Mar 2023

Data Engineer / R Developer

As a member of the Computational Biology Team in a synthetic biology startup, I was performing the functions of a data engineer, data scientist, and database administrator: - Designed from scratch a PostgreSQL database for the high-throughput screening (HTS) assay data, structured and normalized the database to ensure data integrity and high-speed data retrieval, wrote database documentation, and was responsible for day-to-day database administration tasks. - Developed and maintained proprietary R packages custom-built to process and analyze Willow's HTS data throughout the whole data pipeline: reading and cleaning data coming from robots that process microtiter plates, preparing the data for upload to the database while meeting complex data integrity requirements, retrieving data from the database, performing standard calculations (fold change, percent-change, optical density normalization, etc.), filtering and visualizing analysis results. - Built and maintained a specialized Shiny app with a highly modular structure (to address the app's scale, complexity, and frequent changes), which was used by the lab team to analyze HTS data, including visualizing experiment results, automating hit selection, and auto-generating reports. - Developed an R package to retrieve data from Benchling lab notebook backend PostgreSQL database. - Documented R packages and apps with pkgdown, wrote unit tests with testhat, worked in CI/CD environment with other compbio team members, and trained science team members in using our apps.

Calgary Food Bank | Apr 2021 - Oct 2021

Quantitative Researcher

- Automated routine / regular data analysis and processing tasks using the R programming language by converting manual (spreadsheet-based) and SQL-based workflows to interactive R Shiny applications and self-updating R Markdown reports, ensuring time-efficiency and reproducibility. - Developed a specialized Shiny app which automated geospatial analysis of the root causes of food insecurity across the city of Calgary for 13 key indicators across different types of the City's administrative units and different Food Bank programs. - Performed a wide variety of data visualization tasks, including creating web dashboards, interactive plotly plots and Leaflet maps, static ggplot2 graphics and tmap maps. - Analyzed time-series data to forecast the demand for different programs, locations, and product types. - Contributed to program evaluation by identifying KPIs, measuring progress towards achieving programs’ goals, analyzing and visualizing the impacts of COVID-19 on all of the core programs. - Administrated app-running server (Apache on Linux+ Shiny Server), maintained Git repositories.

University of Saskatchewan | Jan 2018 - Dec 2019

Research Officer

- Performed data analysis for a comprehensive overview of the local economic and social indicators of northern Saskatchewan communities, including data mining, cleaning and transforming datasets, building descriptive and predictive models, econometric and geospatial data visualization. - Provided policy advice to municipalities based on our findings – as reports and presentations.

University of Saskatchewan | Aug 2015 - Dec 2017

Research Assistant

- Analyzed survey and focus group data about public attitudes towards different sources of energy in Saskatchewan: collected and coded survey data, designed statistical methodology, performed statistical analysis and visualized the results. - Carried out comparative analysis of carbon pricing policies across Canadian provinces to estimate the potential effects of the federal carbon pricing initiative on the Saskatchewan economy.
