Residence Life Coordinator & Title IX Investigator

During my two-year tenure as a RLC at Beloit College, I supervised 14 Resident Assistants (RAs) and advised them regarding conflict mediation strategies, effective programming, administrative duties, and the benefits of campus involvement. Each year, I oversaw five student residence halls and three student houses consisting of over 300 freshman-to-senior students. Occasionally, I would administer disciplinary sanctions to students who violated college policies including drug possession/use, property damage, unregistered pets, and fire safety violations. This role also required that I serve as a member of the Dean Staff on Call rotation, which meant that I was on the first line of defense during student crisis situations both during and outside of normal business hours. An accompanying role I held during my time as an RLC was that of Title IX Investigator for Beloit College. As one of two Title IX investigators at the college, I examined cases of potential sexual harassment, sexual violence, and discrimination based on sex/gender. Being part of a small residence life team meant that all RLCs adopted adjacent responsibilities. One of my adjacent responsibilities was managing the Residence Life shuttle bus program. I worked with campus Security to recruit and train RAs to become van certified and drive groups of students to and from the off-campus bus stop during school breaks. My other adjacent responsibility was maintaining the Residence Life web pages on Beloit College’s website. This required me to complete training on website software and development, and then use that training to make website improvements.

Resident Adviser

As an RA, I became a community leader and source of campus knowledge and support for students. I hosted 1-2 events for students each month. Examples of such events include: Water Balloon Dodgeball, Speed Friending, and RA Loveline. I also served on the RA on-call duty rotation 1-2 times a month. This involved responding to student lockouts, noise complaints, and crisis situations in a timely and professional manner. I was able to attend FRAS (Florida Resident Assistant Seminar) 2017, hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, from January 20th-22nd. FRAS allows RAs from different Florida colleges and universities to network and share advice on building their campus community and engaging with students in their residence halls. At this multi-day seminar, I participated in speaker sessions on event planning, leadership development, and best tips for supporting students academically and socially.

NSF REU: NYU Center for Behavioral Statistics and the Study of Motivated Perception Intern

During this highly selective two month-long Research Experience for Undergraduates, I worked with a team of nine other undergraduate interns in on several social psychology research studies. I lead a small team of three interns in designing a survey study to determine if people we view as “closer” to us (ex: parent; best-friend) are more likely to impact the kinds of goals we value and strive towards compared to people we view as “not close” to us (ex: celebrities). We presented this work at the NYU Diversity Summer Student Research Conference. I partnered with three other interns to create a set of scenarios and design a survey study to examine how participants would judge (1) a fictional person’s culpability for a crime and (2) the amount of control the fictional person had over their circumstances, depending on the fictional person’s race and gender. We also assessed participants’ sympathy for the fictional person in each scenario. We presented this work at the NYU Diversity Summer Student Research Conference. Worked with the other nine interns to design a survey study to determine if adolescents viewed other people who look similar to themselves as having more leadership potential than people who look different from themselves. We held a workshop on this topic at the NYU Diversity Summer Student Research Conference. Worked with four other interns to begin designing a study that would assess how participants’ choice of leaders with more masculine or feminine facial features is affected by psychological stress.
