Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Course Instructor

In April 2018, something completely revolutionary happened: students teaching students for a 10 week Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Course. After I got my ESTIEM Green Belt Lean Six Sigma Course, I was granted the opportunity to pass the knowledge that once was given to me. Me and 4 more wonderful trainers (also amazing students), throughout 10 weeks, 8 hours per week, we taught 40 students the ways of Lean Six Sigma :) This initiative was created for all students of the fourth year of the Industrial Engineering and Management of the University of Minho with the support of one teacher from the University and with this, we've been able to complement his curricular unit. This course wouldn't be the same without all theory presented by Gregory Watson, one of the most important persons in the 6 Sigma movement. The students had the opportunity to learn about: • DMAIC Cycle • Define: Project Charter; SIPOC; EXplanatory Data Analysis; • Measure: Deployment Diagram; Fishbone Diagram; Potential Problem Analysis; Measurement System Analysis; • Analyse: Regressions Analysis; Yamazumi Diagram • Improve: Improve Chain Thinking; Payoff-Effort Matrix; Prioritization Matrix; Demonstration Test; Simulation; Benchmark • Control: Documenting Standard Work; Mistake-proofing; Statistical Control; Implementation Plan; Control Plan; Realization Review; Benefit Capture Plan It was an amazing opportunity to give it back but also to learn! Someone said "By teaching, you learn twice" and it's very very true!

University Project - Improvement of a Manufacturing Process and Implementation of a Kanban System

I was part of a team constituted by 10 Industrial Engineering and Management students which, during a period of 6 months, had two objectives: to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of a tube production process; and to reduce the space utilized in stock after a specific brazing process (used by almost every product of the company) by removing overproduction. Regarding the tube production process, after doing a proper study, we realized we could not satisfy our customer in a long-term. Ater identifying the bottleneck of each workstation, we applied a few layout changes and investments resulting in an aproximate 34% decrease in cycle time and a OEE increase of 4%. With these improvements, the company is able to satisfy the customer needs. Regarding the reduction of space utilized in stock fater the brazing process, we were able to design a Kanban system based on the company needs and limitations. With this implementation, not only we were able to reduce the space utilized in 25% but also with this Kanban we established a more effective FIFO system and ended up with overproduction. In short, we were capable of transforming the whole production system of the factory from a push system into a pull system. Tools Used: • SIMIO in order to simulate the tube production process with and without improvements and to simulate the kanban system. In the kanban system simulation, we were able to simulate more than 65 references throughout 11 final assembly lines. • Excel VBA with the objective of turning our ideas and improvement suggestions more easy to implement. • VSM in order to make a more visual analysis to the tube production process. Also used to compare the final results to the initial ones.

Summer Internship - Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Project

In this summer, I had the opportunity to complete my Lean Six Sigma course by applying the knowledge acquired into action. I had the opportunity to remove a Quality Wall inside a Final Production Line where 15+ different parts were produced. By applying the whole stages of the DMAIC cycle, we've been able to define, track down, measure and get all the information needed to analyze, propose improvements and when and how will they be implemented. In this project, were used several tools: • Project Charter to define to the problem and set the objectives; • SIPOC and Process Map in order to see where we would be working on; • Explanatory Data Analysis using Minitab to work all the data acquired; • Input List, Fishbone Diagram and Cause and Effect Matrix using a funnel technique where we could prioritize the factors (X's) most important; • Reproducibility and repeatability Analysis of all inspection Workers; • Payoff-effort Matrix to prioritize improvements; • Implementation Plan; • Timeline where we can show throughout the time when we should implement the improvements; With this project, we could save around 25k euros a year with the removal of a person doing inspection on the quality wall. It was a great experience to learn more about the industry and more about Lean Six Sigma since I was able to interact with so many people. With all this interaction I could learn from each and every one of them and I was overwhelmed and truly blessed to be part of this project.

Summer Intership

In this three months, I was in the Times & Methods department and here I was able to learn how to calculate production lines capacities and how to develop the calculation of personal necessities for the business plan for the upcoming year. My main project, in this summer, was the development of a tool that generates an OPL (Open point List) and certain KPI's in Excel. This project was made entirely in Excel VBA, a programming language that I learned by myself while working. This tool will be very helpful and it will be used in all products made by Bosch in Braga.
