Ph.D. Candidate

I was a Ph.D. candidate in Catarina Dutilh Novaes's Roots of Deduction research program. My research focussed on conceptualizations of logic and its normativity, philosophical methodology, and the problem of philosophical progress. In my dissertation, I show why philosophical methods such as conceptual analysis do not generate knowledge in the way other scientific methods do. I subsequently explicate a dialogical model of philosophical practice that shows what philosophical methods contribute. I conclude that philosophical methods are expert cognitive tools for thinking outside of the box.

University of Groningen | Sep 2016 - Feb 2017

Lecturer

I teach the Philosophy of Cognitive Science this winter semester to about 100 students. In this course, we critically examine the Representational Theory of Mind, the theory that says that the mind consists of computation on mental representations. We illustrate and criticize this approach using recent computer models of human-like cognition, such as Google Deepmind's AlphaGo, Google Self-Driving Car, and I.B.M.'s Watson. We also look at alternatives, such as the Dynamical Systems approach, and the Mind-Brain Identity theory.

LMU - Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München | Oct 2014 - Feb 2015

Visiting Researcher

Visiting researcher at the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy (MCMP). The MCMP is devoted to the applications of logical and mathematical methods to all kinds of philosophical problems ranging from epistemology and philosophy of science to metaphysics, the philosophy of language, ethics, and political philosophy.

Utrecht University | Jan 2008 - Jan 2012

Teaching Assistant

I worked as a teaching assistant facilitating the following philosophy courses: logic, ethics, argumentation theory, philosophy of language, political philosophy, history of ancient philosophy, and history of modern philosophy. I taught most of these courses for multiple years. Teaching assistants teach seminars that complement the lectures given by professors.
