Process Control Engineer

Supported the commissioning of the Singapore Expansion Project by managing a cross-functional team with stakeholders from departments, 3rd-party contractors and vendors for the efficient execution of automation functional tests imperative to the validation of automation systems built for the new plant. As part of the commissioning and start up automation team, I have also established for the project organisation a workflow for the effective resolution of equipment and maintenance issues during the execution of plant commissioning and start-up activities. Post start-up, my primary role as process control engineer is to ensure reliability and sustainability of process control systems within an Emerson DeltaV DCS, through troubleshooting of issues and optimisation of process control applications.

Olefins Process Control Engineer

In my role as a process control engineer, I am responsible for developing, testing and implementing online control applications for the smooth operation of the chemical proces unit. This involved making use of various tools and technologies to support the process unit to meet their business targets as well as operate the process units safely, striking a balance between safety, quality and profitability. I am hugely engaged in providing daily technical support to the operations department on process troubleshooting issues. This role also involved identification of gaps in existing control system and developing ideas to eliminate theses gaps for better control efficiency. I have developed competencies in Honeywell process control systems, with the focus on Honeywell TDC-3000 systems, worked on offline simulation tools similar to Aspen and contributed towards plant process optimisation using advanced multivariable control techniques. I have also gained extensive experience in using data analytics and ML techniques like linear regression and clustering to aid in chemical process optimisation and troubleshooting. Safety To support safe and effective operations of process units, I have developed, tested and implemented new online tools in the process control system for Operators, ranging from trip logics, alarming tools and system automation to aid in daily operations. Profitability Use of base control strategies and advanced control techniques (linear programming) to carry out online optimisation, maximise production, minimise costs and ultimately improve bottom line. This includes development of new control applications and modification to existing applications to meet the changing business needs at the same time using process control to ensure that the process unit operates within safe limits. I have taken part in multiple projects to revamp and improve site advanced control systems for profit generation.

Energy Analyst

Steward of Site Energy performance optimisation (minimisation of site cost spending on energy and variable operating costs) with monthly energy cost analysis and stewardship with Business Management to track performance. In charge of seeking continuous improvement initiatives to achieve reduction in energy consumption while balancing revenue maximisation. Participation in Global Energy Benchmarking (Solomon Benchmarking) exercise which involved extensive data analytics, competency in Solomon Benchmarking concepts and comparison of site energy performance against other chemical plants to identify current site gaps in operations and facilities. The role also required the extensive use of modeling tools to test and evaluate the efficacy of new ideas towards energy reduction.

Process Engineer

As contact engineer in a large scale olefins production steam cracking plant, my role involves highly demanding work which spans across process troubleshooting, profit optimisation, problem solving, systems management and business analysis. The backbone of the work as a contact engineer is daily monitoring of large scale chemical processes to prohibit any unforeseen process incidents which can lead to process upsets that will cause financial or safety losses. I am also involved in the development of long term projects to ultimately improve the bottom line of the business. In these long term projects, we do process simulations and cost-benefit analysis to come up with the best designs which can balance the key requirements of innovation, profitability, reliability, quality and most importantly, safety. In addition, in the two years, I have contacted and had the experience of learning and understanding the operational challenges of a multitude of chemical processes, including but not limited to, distillation, catalytic reactors, steam compressors and contaminant removal systems.
