STEM into Banking Spring Insight

interview. - Presentations on Equities Execution, FX Technology, Wealth Management and many more delivered by senior RBC employees. - Particularly found the communication of large orders discussed in the Equities Execution presentation interesting. Mathew Szeto explained how the speed of communication is limited by the speed of light and how controlling the speed is much more important and beneficial. This led to RBC developing the THOR platform which uses intentional delays to ensure all the orders placed reach their respective exchanges all at the same time. This platform prevents stock scalpers from taking advantage of the time difference. - Found the Wealth Management presentation engaging, as Mohammed Marikar and Jiahao Sun explained the recent introduction of the NORA bot on the sales floor. This bot simulates an associate on the sales floor and assists advisers communicating with potential clients. RBC are still working on this bot, hoping to develop a more complex algorithm enabling it to proactively send information to the advisers. - My team and I carried out an analysis on a case study about Tesco and their services. The aim was to come to a decision on what Tesco should do about Giraffe and if they should buy Carluccio's. After analysing stock prices, revenues and EBITDA data we presented the conclusion that Tesco should keep Giraffe and buy Carluccio's. - Visited the RBC Trading Floor just after the US Stock Market opened. Participated in a trading game and learnt more about stocks, bonds and cash and how they are affected by the news and financial data.
