Senior Azure Data Engineer

Leadership & Program Innovation -Spearheaded the deployment of a new subscription and governance model for City Year’s Azure environment, to include enhanced resource tagging/ tracking, strengthened role-based access control, and implementation of previously non-existent source control. -Successfully created and maintained automated CI/CD pipelines for code deployment of Data Factory and Databricks resources using Azure DevOps, cutting down release times by 80%. -Assisted in cutting costs through identification of several unused resources, as well as implementing cost alerts and controls to prevent future resource bloat with savings of approximately $20k a year. Pipeline Development & Automation -Phased out all soon to be deprecated U-SQL based transformation pipelines and migrated to a modern Databricks architecture in Python, cutting down pipeline run times by 70%. -Significantly enhanced code maintainability by consolidating 50+ individual U- SQL transformation scripts into 5 flexible and modular Python scripts. Pipeline Development & Automation -Designed, implemented, and maintained pipelines using Azure Data Factory and Databricks, integrating hundreds of gigabytes from various data lakes and transferring stored processed data to Azure Data Warehouse. -Automated the company’s lockbox process by developing a daily pipeline to extract each day’s files and checks for further processing, saving 200 weekly manual hours. Built and maintained through Azure Databricks in Python, with integrations to Jira (ticket management system). -Automated the company’s daily Address Change Service (ACS) mailing process, updating subscriber’s current address. Files pulled/cleaned/wrangled using Python in Databricks, updating tables in SQL Server, and pushing results to an AWS S3 bucket. -Ingested data from disparate data sources using a combination of SQL, Jira API, AWS Boto API, SFTP, and Ring Central using Python to create data views to be used in Power BI reports. Data Visualization & Data Sourcing -Constructed report to visualize and identify various customer segment changes for the means of applying targeted ads and assessing their efficiency. One such example is identifying high frequency subscribers from weeks prior that have changed to casual readers this week. -Designed budget vs actual, call center metrics, and account executive sales reports, to include the sourcing and storage of relevant data. Leadership & Program Innovation -Spearheaded the creation of the Security Operation Center’s (SOC) previously non-existent analytics capabilities. Resulting in the identification of various untapped data and insights. -Delivered regular high-level briefings to senior leadership and various teams regarding status of data driven initiatives and insights gained from cross functional team projects. -Addressed and provided a remedy for a fatal flaw in management’s Utilization formula for the SOC. Challenging the status quo saved a significant part of the team from facing the chopping block.
