I developed tools that allow for a principled analysis of the effects that various optimality requirements can have on the emerging large-scale topologies of networks. Specifically, I introduced a framework that allows us to generate null models of optimal networks, which can, in principle, accommodate an arbitrary number of criteria and enables the analysis of more realistic scenarios in which networked systems are subject to multiple interacting optimality constraints. Moreover, this framework allows for the study of these effects in an isolated manner, without additional interferences that might arise from other exogenous restrictions or dynamical rules that contribute to the network formation process.
