Graduate Research Assistant

Performing bioinformatic analysis on microbiome sequencing data (both 16S and Metagenomics) from bacterial cultures and human samples focused on the role of the gut microbiome in the gut-brain axis. In particular I studied the alterations of the microbiome in patients with major depressive disorder, the effects of antidepressants in the gut microbiome, and evaluated the associations of the early microbiome with measurements of early cognitive development in infants.

Intern at Genoma Mayor company in Santiago de Chile. · Internship based on the development of R functions to enhance the visualization tools of microbial and transcriptomic results, as well as the optimization of commands to reduce the response time to clients. Use of LINUX commands for data processing and quality control, using FASTQC, and visualizations using R. Also made templates for bioinformatic reports for clients.

supervision of Dr. Luis Larrondo. · Performed different laboratory protocols such as, DNA extraction and quantification, DNA purification and gel electrophoresis, E. coli and yeast transformation, and primer design. The intend of the experiments were to evaluate the response of a synthetic pheromone between two different types of yeast (different transformations of pheromone sender yeasts and receiver yeasts). Also, we started to implement a genome editing protocol using the system CRISPR-Cas9.

Intern at AustralBiotech company in Santiago de Chile. · Performed different laboratory protocols to evaluate the effect of different organic nanoparticle formulations on the survival and biofilm production in Salmonella sp. Such protocols included, exopolysaccharide biosynthesis evaluation through CongoRed plate agar, biofilm production under nanoparticle and antibiotic treatments, determination of bacterial growth curve under several treatments and establishment the MIC of the nanoparticle formulations.
