The State of AI Careers 2026

Data and AI hiring grew 80.2% year over year. What those jobs contain has changed.

DataCamp analyzed two million deduplicated job postings across 85 regions, from January 2024 to April 2026, alongside labor market research from the World Economic Forum, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Stanford, Anthropic, and PwC.

Here's what we found:

• Hiring has recovered sharply. Data and AI job postings rose 80.2% year over year in the first quarter of 2026, after two years of stagnation
  AI engineer roles grew 255%; generative AI engineer roles grew 197%
• Automation is landing on individual tasks, not whole roles
• AI skills now command a 56% wage premium

Bottom line: The jobs aren't disappearing. The tasks inside them are.
