I recently compared Gemini 4 Carbon with Claude Opus 5.5, the Claude model most people use day to day. But if you pay for Claude Fable 5.1, Anthropic's top general-access model, that comparison doesn't quite answer your question. So here's a follow-up comparison.

My answer turns out to be different. Against Opus 5.5, Carbon came out only slightly ahead. Against Fable 5.1, the gap is much wider, and so is the price difference. That might surprise you since Fable 5.1 is the top-tier model. But know that Opus 5.5 is newer, and the mid-tier often catches up and surpasses the older top-tier model. That's the pattern we've been seeing.

Gemini 4 Carbon vs. Claude Fable 5.1 at a Glance

This one is less close than you might expect:

  • Availability: Fable 5.1 is available now. Carbon is still in limited preview.
  • Strengths: Carbon leads on almost every shared benchmark, with big gaps on long documents, security, and business automation. Fable 5.1's edge is that you can use it today.
  • Price: Carbon's introductory price is $2 / $10 per million input/output tokens. Even its full price of $4 / $20 is less than half of Fable 5.1's $10 / $50.

Carbon is cheaper and, on paper, stronger. So for most Fable 5.1 users, the real question isn't whether Carbon is better. It's whether to wait for it or move to something cheaper now.

What Is Gemini 4 Carbon?

Carbon is Google's most capable model. It's built for long-running agentic work, like spending hours tracking a bug through a large codebase, and it tops the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

Carbon also sets state-of-the-art scores on finding and exploiting vulnerabilities, so Google is rolling it out carefully. Cyber defenders in its Fairwind Program get access first, then trusted partners, then developers and businesses. Google hasn't given dates or published a technical report.

What Is Claude Fable 5.1?

Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's top general-access model, released at the very beginning of September. It shares its weights with Claude Mythos 5.1, a version with looser cybersecurity safeguards that only verified organizations can use.

Fable 5.1 has a 1M-token context window, 128K max output, and always-on adaptive thinking that defaults to high effort. It's available through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.

Anthropic itself now points most users elsewhere. Its docs recommend starting with Claude Opus 5.5, which performs at Fable 5.1's level on most tasks for 60% less per token. Fable 5.1 is for the hardest reasoning and long-horizon agent work.

Benchmarks: How Far Apart Are They?

They are far apart. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Carbon scores 59 and Fable 5.1 scores 49. If you're not familiar with the index, know that ten points is a large gap at the top of that index.

Individual tests tell the same story:

BenchmarkWhat it measuresGemini 4 CarbonClaude Fable 5.1
GraphWalksReasoning over very long inputs96.2%65.0%
AutomationBenchBusiness workflow automation53.9%31.4%
CWE-benchFinding software vulnerabilities71.0%58.0%
FrontierSWE 2Long software engineering tasks61.2%56.3%
AA Intelligence IndexOverall, across many tasks5949

Carbon leads every row, by about 31 points on long-context reasoning, 22 on business automation, and 13 on vulnerability detection. The closest gap is software engineering, at about 5 points.

Two issues, though: Most of these rows come from Google's launch materials, and Google picked tests where Carbon shines and ran it at its highest settings. And Carbon isn't flawless: Artificial Analysis measured its hallucination rate at 11%, up from 4% for Gemini 4 Argon. I repeated that hallucination rate metric in my other post because it surprised me a bit and I think it's worth repeating.

Gemini 4 Carbon vs. Fable 5.1 Pricing

Carbon is also much cheaper. That will be true even after its launch discount ends:

 Gemini 4 CarbonClaude Fable 5.1
Input (per 1M tokens)$2 at launch, then $4$10
Output (per 1M tokens)$10 at launch, then $20$50
Cached input (per 1M tokens)~$0.10, then ~$0.20$0.25
Context window1M tokens (reported)1M tokens
Max outputNot published128K tokens

The gap grows per task because Fable 5.1 is verbose. It used 160M output tokens to complete the Artificial Analysis index, more than twice the median. A task there cost $12.99 with Fable 5.1 and $7.76 with Carbon, at Carbon's launch price. Batch processing cuts Fable 5.1's price in half, but that only works for jobs that can wait.

Should You Switch to Gemini 4 Carbon?

For most Fable 5.1 users, yes, you should switch once you can.

Switch to Carbon when it's available if:

  • You feed the model very long documents or codebases
  • You automate business workflows or do security work
  • Fable 5.1's cost is the main thing limiting how much you use it

Stay with Fable 5.1 if:

  • You need a model you can ship with today
  • Your workflows are built around Claude Code and Anthropic's tools. Even then, though, you should read up on Opus 5.5.
  • Your evals show Fable 5.1 handling tasks that cheaper models fail

What People Are Saying About Gemini 4 Carbon

The first reactions were about results. One example: Vending-Bench tests whether a model can run a simulated vending machine business over a long period, and it's scored by the final bank balance.

Tweet from @DennisonBertram: "Holy cow: on vending bench Carbon is up to $16K in bank balance, more than 3x Fable."

After the initial reactions, though, people were mostly complaining about the wait. That was to be expected: Google announced its strongest-ever model, then told (most) people they don't have access to it.

Tweet from @vikktorrrre: "Google has until next week to make Gemini 4 Carbon available worldwide and properly claim the SOTA model title, because a certain man has a Titan model in his arsenal: Fable 5.5."

On the one hand, it's good to create buzz and momentum. On the other, it creates a risk that you could be leapfrogged. A competitor (I mean Anthropic) could come up with a better model and release it while you're still teasing yours. In fact, Fable 5.5 was buzzing, and Fable 5.5 is only a rumor. But that goes to show the problem of releasing info about a model that you can't yet use. People might compare it to another model no one can use.

Tweet from @synthwavedd: "I hate this pattern of DeepMind announcing things that are weeks out from anyone being able to actually use. Fable 5.5 will beat you to it and be a better model."

So we're hoping Google hurries up. Every week Carbon stays in preview gives Anthropic more time to respond.

We'll be watching which comes first. And to hear the moment it happens, subscribe to The Median, our free Friday newsletter that breaks down the week's key AI stories.

Final Thoughts

The takeaway: Carbon beats Fable 5.1 on the benchmarks we have, and costs less than half as much. If Carbon were broadly available tomorrow, and you aren't especially loyal to Anthropic, then by all means switch. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if, while we're waiting for Carbon to finally be available, Fable 5.5 appears and takes our attention.

FAQs

Can I use Gemini 4 Carbon now?

Probably not. Google is limiting access to selected cyber defenders and Fairwind Program partners. Developers and businesses come later, and Google hasn't given a date.

Is Gemini 4 Carbon better than Claude Fable 5.1?

On published benchmarks, yes. Carbon scores 59 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index to Fable 5.1's 49, and leads on long-context reasoning, business automation, vulnerability detection, and software engineering. Most head-to-head numbers come from Google, so test both on your own work.

Which is cheaper?

Gemini 4 Carbon. It costs $2 / $10 per million input/output tokens at launch and $4 / $20 after that. Claude Fable 5.1 costs $10 / $50.

Which is better for coding?

Carbon edges Fable 5.1 on FrontierSWE 2 (61.2% vs. 56.3%), the smallest gap in our comparison. If you code in Claude Code, Claude Opus 5.5 is a cheaper alternative you can use today.

Should I wait for Gemini 4 Carbon instead of using Fable 5.1?

Not necessarily. If cost is the issue, Claude Opus 5.5 is available now at Carbon's full price and performs at Fable 5.1's level on most tasks. Test Carbon once Google opens access.
