When Segun Umoru discovered DataCamp through a scholarship opportunity in April 2022, he couldn't have predicted how this platform would transform his career in data science.

Prior to DataCamp, Segun Umoru was working as a data analyst, leveraging his strong mathematical background but seeking ways to advance in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. As someone who had always been passionate about solving complex problems, he recognized that to stay competitive, he needed to expand his toolkit beyond traditional analysis methods into more advanced areas like AI and machine learning.

I want to be at the front end of the trend in tech," he explains. "I want to stay at the cutting edge of different technologies and solutions.

Building Data Science and AI Skills

Segun went on to complete over 30 courses, focusing primarily on Python programming and AI applications. He has earned over 140,000xp on Datacamp. Two courses in particular he loved and would recommend to others.

  • Data Governance: Segun built a strong foundation in data ethics, quality, and management applicable to working in small and large organizations. It changed his perspective and thinks it would be valuable for anyone working in data science.
  • Developing AI Applications: Segun gained expertise in modern technologies such as Hugging Face, LangChain, and using OpenAI's APIs. This course allowed him to move beyond just doing data analysis and to become an engineer who can build AI apps. He wants others to become this capable too.

A Transformative Learning Experience

What drew Segun to DataCamp wasn't just the comprehensive curriculum—it was the platform's practical, real-world approach to learning. He loved the community, being able to use the mobile app to continue his practice on the go, but he has two favorite parts of the platform he wanted to highlight.

  • Interactive Learning: The platform's hands-on projects and multiple-choice Q&A format proved invaluable for both practical skill development and interview preparation.
  • Expert-Led Learning: Not only did he love that the courses were created by experts working at Microsoft and Google, but he also was a regular participant in DataCamp's webinars and cod

The approach and methodology of teaching, based on industry professionals bringing their real-world experience into the courses, has been a game changer

From Theory to Real-World Impact

The true measure of Segun's success lies in how he's applied his DataCamp knowledge to create meaningful solutions. His most notable achievement was developing an AI-powered chatbot using OpenAI and LangChain to assist disabled individuals with filling out government forms. This project perfectly demonstrated the practical application of his learning in AI and prompt engineering.

His career trajectory has been equally impressive. Segun transitioned from data analyst to data scientist, eventually securing a consulting role with Craft Study, a UK-based company. There, he applied his expertise to optimize customer retention strategies and feature deployment, achieving a remarkable 25% reduction in resource usage.

Based on what I've gained in DataCamp, I'm ready for any kind of Data or AI opportunity.

Paying It Forward: From Student to Instructor

Today, Segun has come full circle—now working as a data science instructor himself. He mentors students and incorporates DataCamp's project-based learning approach in his own teaching methodology. Helping more people have the transformative experience of becoming skilled with data and AI.

DataCamp has been a game changer for me, and I hope I can be a game changer for others
